Yamato Scale Dataweigh, the world’s leading manufacturer of multihead weighers and checkweighers, has equipped Finlay Beverages with a more cost effective and flexible packaging process. The installation of two new machines at the Pontefract site will allow the company to weigh a broader range of products, of varying weights, with no loss in efficiency.

Finlay Beverages is the largest packer of private label tea and coffee in the UK, with over 100 years experience in the industry. Focusing on achieving the highest standards in consistency, value and customer service, the company also has high ethical and environmental standards.

Following a recent review of its processing and packaging lines, Finlay Beverages investigated the possibility of improving the versatility of its operations. This included handling a wider range of ground and bean coffee products without compromising accuracy or efficiency.

Ground coffee is complicated to work with when packing and requires machines that can quickly seal the product once it has been distributed. Coffee is also an expensive commodity, so it is absolutely essential that it is packed accurately and to a high standard every time.

With increasing pressure on manufacturers to supply products quicker than ever before, without impacting on quality, Finlay Beverages required a solution that would enable it to accurately pack their coffee products with different characteristics and requirements quickly, efficiently and hygienically with minimal downtime and no loss of production.

To ensure Finlay Beverages was able to meet these needs, Yamato installed two varieties of its Alpha series multihead weigher, both complete with gantrys and weigher enclosures.

By replacing the existing machines – which used a traditional auger to distribute products to packages – with a Multihead weighing system, far more versatility was achieved. The Yamato machines enable Finlay Beverages engineers to quickly and easily alter the calibration of the hardware in order to cope seamlessly with constantly changing product types and quantities.

Each installation was completed in under two months and Yamato ensured that the new machines were running at optimum efficiency from the moment they were switched on, with no teething period required to iron out technical difficulties or complete fine-tuning. The machines can run at speeds of up to 55 weighments per minute (wpm) on coffee beans, ground coffee and instant coffee granules.

The installation of the Yamato and Rovema machines has equipped Finlay Beverages with a more versatile packaging operation as well as providing a cost benefit to the company. The machines produce a final product which is aesthetically pleasing and clean, whilst not compromising on speed or efficiency and also pave the way for more versatile products to be handled in the future with minimal disruption to the process.

Paul White, Site Engineering Manager at Finlay Beverages, commented: “Yamato is incredibly knowledgeable about the packaging industry and it was able to suggest a solution to meet our needs and assist in improving our operations. Most impressive was the short period of time required to implement the changes and the immediacy with which the new machines began operating. All of our expectations were exceeded, there was very little down time involved and we now look forward to providing clients with our most accurate and versatile service ever.”

Neil Fowell, Managing Director at Yamato, added: “Finlay Beverages came to us with a specific brief, aimed at improving the flexibility of their packing operation without compromising on accuracy. We assessed the situation and based on the input from the company’s requirements, we proposed a solution that met both the budgetary and business specifications. We are delighted that Paul and his team are so happy with the installation and look forward to a successful relationship with Finlay Beverages going forward.”
